“Home of the Beacons” is quite a claim. Here at the Clark Athletic Center, that claim rings true. For over 30 years, this multi-purpose facility has served as the primary hub for the UMass Boston Athletics Department.

The Clark Athletic Center has undergone numerous upgrades. It stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to athletics and recreation. Inside, you will find much more than just a gymnasium.

For those seeking an active lifestyle, the Clark Athletic Center offers a vibrant and inclusive environment. Three basketball courts stand ready. They can be converted for volleyball or badminton. The center is conveniently located near the softball field and residence halls. It provides something for everyone. It is the perfect place to unwind and have fun.

Let’s step inside the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. It is one of the two main facilities at Clark. It is deemed one of the most impressive rinks in the New England Hockey Conference. Up to 1,000 spectators can fill the rink’s seats. The coaching staffs for both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are housed here. Every home game is accessible through the Beacons Broadcast Network. Supporters can follow their Beacons even if they cannot attend a game.

In the fall of 2016, the ice rink was renamed from the Beacons Ice Arena. It became the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. Coach Barry mentored students on and off the ice at Boston State College and UMass Boston. The naming ceremony marked the formal start of a $5 million rehabilitation project. The goal was to transform it into the premier hockey venue in Division III college athletics.

After the hockey seasons, a temporary multi-purpose surface is installed. This allows basketball and volleyball to be played in the ice rink. Each August, the ice is reinstalled. New sheets of ice are created for the upcoming hockey season. Recreational skating is also available for students throughout the school year.

The Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium underwent a major renovation in the summer of 2012. The project addressed the replacement of failed wall, skylight, and roofing systems. It included master planning for future changes to the adjacent UMass campus.

Whether you’re a student-athlete or simply seeking a recreational outlet, the Clark Athletic Center offers a space for everyone. It is a place where you can celebrate the spirit of recreation and community. So, embrace the energy, join the fun. Experience the heart of UMass Boston athletics right here at the Clark Athletic Center.
