Fr. O’Connell Hall. A name whispered with respect on this campus. It stands as more than just a building. It embodies the spirit and history of The Catholic University of America.

Now, let’s step back in time. Imagine this very spot in 1914. The campus was smaller then. Fr. O’Connell Hall, then known as Graduate Hall, was one of only six buildings. Fewer than 600 students walked these grounds.

Originally, the Knights of Columbus built it. It served as a residence for graduate men. Over the years, Fr. O’Connell Hall has transformed. It became University Center. Then it was Cardinal Hall. It even served as an undergraduate women’s residence hall.

Can you picture it as a bustling dining hall? Students chatted and laughed here. A food court filled the air with enticing smells. And for those in the know, a much-loved student pub offered a place to unwind.

For a century, Fr. O’Connell Hall has been a gateway. It has welcomed countless students to The Catholic University of America. Many alumni remember this collegiate gothic building. Its beautiful tracery windows made a lasting first impression.

Today, Fr. O’Connell Hall continues its role as a gateway. But now, it is the actual gateway. Prospective students begin their journey here. The Office of Admissions is located within its walls.

Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, and the Registrar also call Fr. O’Connell Hall home. Even after graduation, students maintain a connection. The Office of Alumni Relations is here to welcome them back.

The building is named for the Most Rev. David M. O’Connell. He was the 14th president of the university. He also served as Bishop of Trenton. His leadership left an indelible mark.

During his twelve years as president, Bishop O’Connell oversaw significant growth. He initiated the construction of three new residence halls. He spearheaded the Pryzbyla Center. Bishop O’Connell also purchased nearly 50 acres of land. This increased the campus size by a third.

Bishop O’Connell strengthened the university’s Catholic identity. He introduced the First Year Experience. He also established a relationship with the Conventual Franciscan Friars. Pope Benedict XVI even visited the campus during his tenure.

As you explore Fr. O’Connell Hall, notice the named spaces. These honor the generous donors. Their commitment made the renovations possible. Their legacy lives on within these walls.

Fr. O’Connell Hall stands as a testament to vision and dedication. It is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of The Catholic University of America. It is a place of welcome. It is a place of growth. And it is a place to call home.
