Whispers of history echo across Teerk Roo Ra National Park. This small island in Moreton Bay holds a fascinating past. Teerk Roo Ra meaning ‘place of many shells’ was once a vital resource for the Quandamooka People. They harvested its rich land and sea resources for centuries.

Teerk Roo Ra National Park was not initially of great interest to the first Europeans. Its value as a place of isolation became clear later. It then served as a quarantine station. This was from 1874 to the 1890s. Imagine immigrant ships arriving their passengers sick and diseased. The quarantine station processed many. Remnants of this time remain. You can still see concrete slabs a well a brick building and a stone jetty at Platypus Bay. This jetty built by prison labour is culturally significant. It is one of the few remaining stone jetties in Queensland.

Later Teerk Roo Ra transformed into a lazaret. This was a hospital for Hansen’s disease patients. It opened in 1907. It was Australia’s first purpose-built multiracial lazaret. The lazaret’s design reflected the social values of its time. European patients had better conditions than non-European patients. The non-European compound initially had rudimentary huts. Patients complained bitterly about these. Upgrades followed including corrugated iron sheets and concrete floors replacing the earth floors. A church was built in 1908. It became an Anglican place of worship.

The lazaret closed in 1959. Effective drug treatments for leprosy made it redundant. Teerk Roo Ra National Park’s history is a complex one. It reflects the changing times and the diverse people who inhabited it. The island’s story is one of isolation and healing of cultural significance and natural beauty. The island’s vegetation is largely intact. It includes Melaleuca quinquenervia swamp Callitris columellaris forest and open eucalypt forest. Wildlife such as wallabies and birds thrive here. Dolphins turtles and even dugongs can be seen in the waters. Teerk Roo Ra National Park offers a unique blend of history nature and culture. It is a place to reflect on the past and appreciate the present. It is a place to explore and learn. It is a place of many stories waiting to be discovered.
