Slipping through the doorway of Akagakiya is like stepping back in time. This isn’t your typical polished Kyoto dining experience. Akagakiya, tucked away near Sanjo, offers a taste of old-school Kyoto. The red neon sign above the door gives it an unintentionally seedy vibe. Inside, smoke-stained wooden beams and cloth-wrapped wires whisper stories of decades past. The lighting is dim, adding to the mysterious atmosphere. Don’t expect perfect Instagram photos here. Akagakiya prioritizes ambiance over aesthetics. Surprisingly, despite its traditional appearance, Akagakiya provides a well-translated English menu. It’s a haven for those seeking non-touristy izakaya fare. Their grilled chicken skewers are satisfying. The oden is decent. But their real strength lies in the seafood. The sashimi is incredibly fresh. The sea bream is bouncy and clean-tasting. In autumn, try the “half-half sanma,” a Pacific saury mackerel prepared grilled and as sashimi. However, the must-try dish at Akagakiya is the shime saba, vinegared mackerel. It’s a local favorite. You might see a chain reaction of orders. One person orders it, then another, and another. Akagakiya’s version is gently tart, not overwhelmingly sour. The mackerel is remarkably fresh, a beautiful swirl of silver-blue skin and rose-pink flesh. Another recommended dish is the kumiage yuba, creamy soy milk skin topped with pickled plum, horseradish, and soy sauce. It’s a delightful mix of sweet, creamy, spicy, sour, and salty flavors. Don’t miss the kamo rosu, lean slices of duck fanned out in a soy-based broth. The service at Akagakiya reflects Kyoto reserve. The staff won’t shower you with forced smiles. It feels authentic. It’s the kind of place that rewards repeat visits. Grab a seat at the counter, where the regulars gather. Even the seats near the open door offer a unique perspective. In summer, they’re the coolest spot. In autumn, you might need some hot sake or oden to ward off the chill. Watch the chefs at work. Observe the other regulars. A lady engrossed in a novel while enjoying fried chicken. An elderly couple quietly chatting with the chef. A businessman furiously smoking over his beer and mackerel. Perhaps you’ll strike up a conversation and make new friends. There are no prices on the menu. Expect to spend between JPY5000 and JPY8000 per person, especially if you’re drinking. Akagakiya isn’t about being coddled. It’s about experiencing a genuine slice of local Kyoto.
