Journey to the northwest corner of the University of Macau’s Hengqin campus. Here, Choi Kai Yau College stands as a testament to a father’s legacy and a scholar’s vision. Choi Kai Yau College was established in 2014, thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Jonathan Choi Koon Shum and the Choi Kai Yau Foundation. The college is named in honor of Dr. Choi’s late father. It’s one of the first eight residential colleges at the University of Macau. The college is a key component of the university’s unique “4-in-1” education model which integrates academic education, research, community service, and residential college life. Choi Kai Yau College houses over 800 students and 50 faculty members from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. The college fosters a vibrant living-learning community where students and faculty interact closely, stimulating intellectual growth and encouraging the pursuit of ideals. Dr. Choi envisioned the college as a place where students could transform into impactful leaders. The college motto, “Dare to Think; Care to Act,” reflects this aspiration. The founding master of Choi Kai Yau College, Prof. David Pong, played a pivotal role in shaping the college’s identity. A renowned historian of modern China, Prof. Pong brought a wealth of experience and a deep passion for education to his role. He championed a global awareness among students while emphasizing a strong understanding of their own cultural heritage. Prof. Pong even composed the college anthem, setting his own lyrics to the music of Handel’s “See the Conquering Hero Comes.” Prof. Pong retired in 2017 but his legacy continues to shape the college’s values and mission. He remains connected to the college community through social media. Choi Kai Yau College isn’t just a place of residence; it’s a dynamic hub of learning and growth. The college provides a nurturing environment for students to develop into responsible citizens and compassionate leaders. It offers a rich array of activities, internships, and exchange programs, empowering students to broaden their horizons and achieve their full potential.
