Doesn’t it feel amazing to be at a place that has been serving the community for over six decades? We are standing before the Ramonita Negron Rivera Community Center. This center is a place of play and gathering.
Originally, the recreation center was named the Frederick R. Mann Recreation Center. It was built in 1956. Philadelphia earned a reputation as a world leader in recreational programming at that time. The center boasted a swimming pool, athletic fields, and a gymnasium. State-of-the-art playground equipment was present. Several event spaces completed the picture.
The Mann Recreation Center hosted athletic competitions and theater productions. The Mann Center for Older Adults was originally located here. It moved next door in 1980.
At the dedication ceremony in January 1956, Mayor Richardson Dilworth made a promise. He assured Philadelphians the facility would be properly staffed and maintained. Adults and children would enjoy its full use. Unfortunately, the city fell short on this promise.
During the 1970s and 80s, Philly’s recreation centers suffered government neglect. This site was one of them. Neighborhood youth needed the recreation center more than ever. They sought refuge from drug crime. In 1979, the facility was renamed the Joseph J. Hersch Memorial Recreation Center. This did nothing to improve its condition.
Dedicated community members advocated for the facility. Finally, it received funding for repairs in the early 90s. In 1995, the facility was rechristened. It received its current name the Ramonita Negron Rivera Recreation and Community Center.
Hard-working residents have made Rivera Recreation Center a vital asset. They support families and children facing harsh neighborhood conditions. Today, the center offers after-school activities. It also provides academic support and athletic programming. A public computer center and community event space are available.
Currently, the center is undergoing a $10 million renovation. This includes building improvements and a new sprayground. A community garden and updated athletic facilities are planned.
HACE Philadelphia is leading this project. The renovations further the community revitalization. This is outlined in HACE 2025 Good Lands Neighborhood Plan.
The renovations include a common entrance. This will serve both the Rivera Recreation Center and Mann Older Adult Center. The aim is to promote intergenerational cohesion. Mann Center’s improved facilities will support senior programs. These include food programs, games, arts and cultural programming, and fitness equipment.
Recreational amenities will include indoor and outdoor fitness areas. There will be afterschool programs plus boxing and karate. Outdoor amenities will feature a community garden and improved sports fields and courts. Additional renovations include a new HVAC system and site furniture. Full ADA access will be ensured.
The Ramonita Negron Rivera Community Center stands as a testament to community resilience. It shows dedication and the power of collective action. It is a place where memories are made and futures are shaped. A true heart of the neighborhood.
