“Abandoned old cars to gloriously peaceful wildlife”. That’s quite the change. Welcome to Blue Heron Park on Staten Island. This nature refuge wasn’t always so serene.

Blue Heron Park is now a haven. It has meadows, ponds, streams, marshes, and woodlands. New York City acquired the land between 1974 and 2001. The official dedication took place in 1996.

Local Staten Islanders worked hard. They transformed a wasteland into today’s peaceful park. Blue Heron Park is home to diverse wildlife. You can see owls, ospreys, herons and ducks. Also look out for turtles, tree frogs and spring peepers. Wildflowers add to the park’s beauty. Nature enthusiasts often visit to observe the ecosystem.

Six kettle ponds were formed by a glacier. These ponds teem with marine life. The wetlands are part of the Blue Belt. This area uses undeveloped land for storm water drainage. Spring Pond is the largest pond at 1.75 acres. Blue Heron Pond covers 1.4 acres.

The park provides habitat for many bird species. It is named after the blue heron. Mammals like bats, raccoons, grey squirrels and chipmunks also live here.

Visit the Blue Heron Park visitor center off Poillon Avenue. It’s the starting point for three trails. These trails go through different areas of the park. The visitor center has classrooms and a library. There are also exhibit areas and public restrooms. Enjoy the picnic tables and observation decks. Bird watchers can use a mist net for bird banding.

Urban Park Rangers offer arts and educational activities. Friends of the Blue Heron is a community organization. They connect New Yorkers to nature. They provide environmental education and outdoor recreation. Learn about wildlife management and conservation. Guests can enjoy nature walks and crafts. Zoo animals and holiday events are also available.

Look around. Imagine the change from wasteland to wildlife refuge. Blue Heron Park stands as a testament to restoration. It shows what dedication can achieve.
