Sculpted in bronze, the Monumento agli Alpini in Milan stands as a powerful tribute. This monument isn’t dedicated to a single person, but to the bravery of the Alpini, Italy’s elite mountain troops. The monument depicts a scene from the Italo-Turkish War. Notice the intensity of the Alpino as he hurls a rock. This symbolizes the resourcefulness of the Alpini during the Siege of the Ridotta Lombardia in 1912 when they ran out of ammunition. Originally, sculptor Emilio Bisi, whose own brother founded the National Alpini Association, intended the Monumento agli Alpini for a military barracks. But history had other plans. After a bombing in 1928, the city moved the monument to a more prominent location. Finally, in 1963, it found its home here. The Monumento agli Alpini’s journey reflects the Alpini’s own story. They have bravely served Italy through numerous conflicts. This monument is a reminder of their sacrifices and a tribute to their enduring spirit.
