Let’s step back into the past. Right in front of you stands the Shimogamo Shrine, its history echoing through the centuries. It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to Tamayori-hime, the ‘spirit-inviting maiden’, and her father, Kamo Taketsunomi. This shrine is a living testament to ancient traditions and a serene oasis amidst the bustling city of Kyoto.

Shimogamo Shrine stands proudly in Kyoto’s Sakyo ward, surrounded by the tranquil Shimogamo district. Its formal name is Kamo-mioya Shrine. It is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Legend tells us that Shimogamo Shrine was established sometime in the 6th century, long before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. Legend states that the shrine was actually 100 years older than its counterpart, Kamigamo Shrine. The two shrines are traditionally linked, their purpose being to protect Kyoto from malign influences. The shrine’s name references the area’s early inhabitants, the Kamo clan, many of whom still live near the shrine their ancestors served.

Inside the shrine’s grounds, you’ll find an enchanting forest, a remnant of the primeval Tadasu no Mori. Take a peaceful walk through the shaded groves, imagine walking through ancient forests, and breathe in the crisp, clean air. The shrine is also a popular spot for the national pastime game of kemari, where priests often entertain visitors with lively performances.

Take your time, explore the beautiful Shimogamo Shrine, and step away from the hustle and bustle of modern Kyoto. Let the ancient wisdom and calming serenity wash over you.
