“A tireless fighter for social justice” the inscription reads. This is the Omer Mommaerts Plaque. It’s a simple metal plaque yet it tells a powerful story. A story of a man deeply committed to his community. A man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others.

Omer Mommaerts wasn’t just a name on a plaque. He was a vital part of Brussels’ fabric. Born in Vilvoorde in 1932 he moved to Brussels with his wife Maria. His goal was to make a difference in the Anneessenswijk neighborhood. There he founded De Buurtwinkel. This community center aimed to foster social cohesion. It became a hub connecting different communities. His dedication earned him the prestigious Pluim van TV Brussel award in 2010.

Omer’s commitment extended beyond De Buurtwinkel. He was a long-time member of the ACV Christian trade union. He tirelessly championed the rights of workers. He even ran as an independent candidate for the Brussels Parliament on the PVDA list. He believed in fighting for social equality both in his neighborhood and far beyond.

His activism spanned decades. He was part of the 11.11.11 movement. He participated in Broederlijk Delen’s activities. He even went on a solidarity trip to Congo. These experiences profoundly influenced his commitment to global justice.

He wasn’t just a political activist. He was a family man. He raised four children with Maria. His family was the source of his strength and love. Yet his family life never diminished his dedication to social justice. He maintained a remarkable balance between family life and political activism.

Sadly Omer passed away in 2021. This plaque serves as a lasting tribute. It’s a poignant reminder of his unwavering commitment. It honors his tireless work for social justice. It celebrates a life well-lived in service to others. Look closely. See his name. Remember his legacy. His fight for equality continues to inspire.
