“Large hill” or “large slope.” That’s what Osaka means. Today we explore Osaka Castle. It stands as a powerful symbol of Osaka and Japan itself.

Osaka Castle is more than just a beautiful structure. It’s a landmark that has witnessed centuries of Japanese history. Construction began in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He envisioned a castle bigger and better than any other.

Hideyoshi wanted to show off his power and a unified Japan. Over 100000 people helped build it. It was modeled after Azuchi Castle.

Sadly Hideyoshi died soon after its completion in 1598. His son Toyotomi Hideyori inherited the castle. The castle was very resilient.

In 1614 Tokugawa Ieyasu attacked and destroyed Osaka Castle. It was burned to the ground during the Tokugawa conquest. But the castle rose again.

Tokugawa Hidetada reconstructed it in 1620. He made significant improvements. The main tower was raised higher. It had five visible stories outside and eight inside. Enormous stone walls were constructed to protect it. These walls still stand today. They survived bombings and wars.

Lightning struck the castle in 1665. It ignited stored gunpowder and burned the tenshu down. But even fire could not erase its significance.

The Osaka Castle has been damaged and rebuilt many times. Each time it returns. It reflects the resilience of Osaka. The castle even served as an armory during World War II. It survived air raids in 1945. The main building needed restoration.

The Osaka Castle complex covers over 15 acres. It includes thirteen structures recognized as important cultural assets. These include gates turrets storehouses and wells. Scenic pathways and gardens connect them. Visitors can rest during their tour.

Inside Osaka Castle is a modern museum. It showcases the castle’s history. It displays various Japanese artifacts. Elevators and security cameras blend the old with the new.

The Osaka Castle is open to the public. People come to enjoy its beautiful gardens. The castle park is packed during the cherry blossom bloom. This is known as Hanami. Food vendors and taiko drummers entertain the crowds.

Osaka Castle has appeared in films and books. Godzilla famously battled Anguirus there in “Godzilla Raids Again”. The castle collapsed in the film. It was also a major location in James Clavell’s novel “Shōgun”.

Osaka Castle is easily accessible. It is near Osakajōkōen Station on the JR West Osaka Loop Line. It is a must-see destination.

As you leave Osaka Castle remember its story. It is a story of ambition destruction and rebirth. It is a symbol of Osaka’s and Japan’s enduring spirit.
