Imagine a tiny emerald hidden within the rugged coastline. That’s Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary may be small but it plays a vital role in the lives of migrating birds.

Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary is only four acres. Yet, it is among Mass Audubon’s smallest wildlife sanctuaries. This inviting spot is for hundreds of migrating songbirds. Warblers, vireos and thrushes pass through each year.

Why is this place so important? Nahant is essentially an island. It has a predominantly rocky shoreline. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow tombolo. A causeway runs along it.

The main portion of Nahant lies roughly three miles southeast of the mainland. It is well-treed but heavily developed. There is a swampy vegetated lowlands area. A golf course, two undeveloped headlands, a cemetery, several small woodlots and a small thicket exist. Mass Audubon owns the small thicket.

Despite its small size, the Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary is significant. The sanctuary consists of a red maple swamp, brush and a stream. It serves as an important resting place for migrating birds. This is especially true in May, September and October. Songbirds, vireos and thrushes stop here.

Visitors can explore a short loop trail. Coastal waters border the sanctuary. Here, observers spot loons, grebes, ducks and other seabirds. These birds appear in varying types and numbers. This is especially true in winter.

The Nahant Bay area contains diverse habitats. These habitats include sandy beaches and mudflats. Mussel beds and a large shallow bay exist. Rocky shorelines, brushland and thickets thrive. These attract a wide array of bird species. Several occur as migrants. Some are considered endangered, threatened or of special concern.

Lynn Harbor lies on the west side of the causeway. It has mudflats and extensive mussel beds. These are exposed at low tide. They attract large flocks of Common Eiders. Thousands of shorebirds and gull species are attracted to the shallow bay and beaches. The bay also hosts large flocks of sea and diving ducks. This happens from fall through spring. A substantial number of immature scoters summer in the area.

The undeveloped and vegetated portions of Nahant provide habitat for migrant land birds. Nahant serves as a migrant trap. It concentrates passerines in both spring and fall. This is due to its insular location. It lies several miles off the southern Essex County coast.

Large fallouts of neotropical and other migrants often ensue. This is comparable to those occurring at Marblehead Neck. This is particularly true in inclement weather.

So, as you walk this short trail at Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary, remember its importance. This tiny patch of land offers a vital refuge. It supports the incredible journeys of countless birds. Take a moment to appreciate the quiet beauty and the crucial role it plays in the natural world.
