Beneath the Lombardy sky rests Cimitero di Villasanta. It’s a place of quiet reflection, but its story echoes with the lives of Villasanta’s people. Cimitero di Villasanta isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a chronicle of Villasanta, etched in stone and whispered on the wind. The cemetery’s location, on Via San Francesco, places it at the heart of the community. It’s open daily, its hours shifting with the seasons. From April 1st to September 30th, the gates welcome visitors from 7:00 am to 7:30 pm. During the colder months, from October 1st to March 31st, the hours are 7:00 am to 5:45 pm. Cimitero di Villasanta embraces all who have ties to the community. Those who passed away within Villasanta’s boundaries, regardless of their residency, find their final rest here. Residents of Villasanta, no matter where they drew their last breath, also return to this hallowed ground. Even those who lived in Villasanta for at least five years, or those connected to specific parishes, can find a place here. Cimitero di Villasanta even extends its embrace to those from neighboring towns with connections to the local parishes. In 2016, Villasanta took a significant step by developing its first cemetery management plan. This forward-thinking approach acknowledged the town’s growing population and the increasing need for burial spaces. The plan included provisions for extending the cemetery grounds. This expansion was crucial to accommodate the projected growth of Villasanta’s population, estimated to reach 16,000 within thirty years. The plan addressed the need for approximately 3,500 burial spaces in the first decade and an additional 2,000 in the following decade. More recently, in 2025, the cemetery underwent renovations. Four new modular structures were added, providing 160 additional spaces for cinerary urns and ossuaries. This addition reflects a growing trend towards cremation among the residents. The 35,000-euro project also included plans to restore sections of the surrounding wall facing Via Dei Mille. This restoration requires approval from the Superintendence of Archaeology and Fine Arts and is scheduled for completion in 2025. Cimitero di Villasanta stands as a testament to Villasanta’s history, reflecting the town’s evolving needs and its commitment to honoring its residents, both past and present. The quiet pathways and serene atmosphere invite reflection, not only on individual lives but also on the enduring spirit of the community.
