Here stands Seungdong Church a testament to faith. Did you know it was once a haven for Korea’s social underdogs? This is the story of Seungdong Church. It is a church with a rich history rooted in social justice and Korean independence.
Seungdong Church’s story began in 1893. Samuel Foreman Moore established it. Initially called Gondanggol Church, it became known as a “baekjeong church.” This is because it welcomed the baekjeong. They were the butchers. They were considered the untouchable class of Joseon society.
The church moved and changed its name several times. It was Gondanggol, then Jungang, and finally Seungdong. It settled in its current Insadong location. After Moore’s death in 1906, Charles Allen Clark became the pastor. Mongyang Yuh Woon-hyung also became active in the church. He was a key figure in Joseon’s political history.
Seungdong Church became a hub for activists. Young church members planned the large student demonstration for the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. In 1939, the church further cemented its place in history. It established the Joseon Theological Seminary.
The buildings of Seungdong Church cover 660 square meters. It spans from the basement to the second floor. Records of the architect and builder have been lost. Yet, it is said that the church was once one of the most magnificent buildings in the area. Newer structures have since obscured its beauty.
In February 1919, students met secretly here. They gathered in a first-floor chamber to plan the March 1st Independence Movement. By February 23, the idea had spread across Korea. On February 28, the official deceleration of independence against the Japanese occupation was distributed here.
Today Seungdong Church stands as Tangible Cultural Asset No. 130. The Seoul Metropolitan Government designated it on April 6, 2001. It is a powerful symbol of faith, resistance, and community. When you are in Insadong, look for this red brick church. It is easily missed. It is hidden off a side road. Modern buildings now block it. Step inside if the door is open.
