Breathe in the history of commerce. Right here stands the Great Gostiny Dvor. It is more than just a building. It is a journey through time.

Great Gostiny Dvor is one of the world’s first shopping arcades. It is also the city’s oldest shopping center. This vast department store sprawls at the intersection of Nevsky Prospekt and Sadovaya Street.

Imagine merchants from all corners of Russia. They gather here to trade their wares. Gostiny Dvor translates to “Guest’s Court.” It was once a feature of all large Russian towns. These buildings served as retail points. They were also warehouses and living quarters.

Empress Elizabeth envisioned a central arcade. It would become the main trading site of the Russian imperial capital. Several architects submitted plans. Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe’s neoclassical design was chosen.

Construction took over twenty years. It lasted from 1761 to 1785. The building is an irregular rectangle. It features two-story arcades surrounding an inner courtyard. Porticoes adorn each external corner. A large central portico faces Nevsky Prospekt.

Originally, the Great Gostiny Dvor housed around 100 stores. These covered 53,000 square meters. Stores were divided into rows. They specialized in cloth, furs, silver and shoes. Retail trade occurred in the external rows. Wholesale trade took place in the courtyard.

Russian merchants haggled with customers. But European merchants introduced fixed prices. By the 20th century, Great Gostiny Dvor had 178 shops. It lost popularity to more fashionable places nearby.

The building suffered damage during World War II. Post-war reconstruction followed. Inner walls were demolished. The separate stores transformed into one large department store.

Today, the Great Gostiny Dvor has 15,000 square meters of retail space. It houses 122 different departments. You can find anything from knitting needles to party supplies. Every day about 300,000 customers shop here.

In the 1840s, gas lighting was installed. Great Gostiny Dvor was one of the first buildings to have it. A nearby metro station also takes its name from Great Gostiny Dvor.

The Great Gostiny Dvor has evolved. It started as a traditional trading hub. It then transformed into a modern shopping center. The Great Gostiny Dvor stands as a testament to St. Petersburg’s commercial history. It has also adapted to modern times. As you explore its halls, remember the centuries of trade. Remember the merchants. Remember the shoppers who have walked these floors. They have made the Great Gostiny Dvor a vital part of the city’s identity.
