Hidden in the heart of North Glasgow stands St Matthew’s Church. A beacon of hope in a community that has known its share of hardship. Its story is one of resilience faith and unwavering service.

St Matthew’s is unique among Scottish Episcopal churches. Founded in the late 19th century it served the working-class area of North Glasgow. This was a time of rapid industrial growth. Steelworks boomed supporting shipbuilding and the British Empire. Migrants from Northern Ireland and northeast Scotland flocked to the area many of whom were Episcopalians. They formed the core of St Matthew’s early congregation.

Initially St Matthew’s worshippers gathered in a tenement building. Led by a lay brotherhood they held services in an upper room. As the population increased they moved to a new building on Balmore Road in 1936. That building still stands today a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders.

The 1980s brought hard times. North Glasgow suffered severe industrial decline. Drug issues became widespread. St Matthew’s responded. They started rehabilitation programs and youth outreach initiatives. They became a vital lifeline for many in need.

In 1999 a community center opened on the church grounds. This became a hub for local people a vital resource in a challenging environment. The church continues its work today supporting those struggling with addiction and poverty. They offer a safe haven a place of comfort and hope.

St Matthew’s has championed the Concrete Garden. Now an independent charity this project promotes community gardening and permaculture workshops. It provides outdoor play for young people and numerous volunteer opportunities. It’s a testament to the church’s commitment to improving the lives of its community.

Despite the challenges of maintaining buildings and human resources St Matthew’s remains a symbol of hope. They offer the Eucharist a sacred space for celebration prayer and mourning. It’s a testament to the enduring strength of faith in the face of adversity. St Matthew’s Church stands tall a reminder of the power of community and the enduring spirit of those who call it home. Their work continues a constant testament to perseverance and compassion in the heart of Glasgow.
