Deep within Volkspark Rehberge, a rustling in the undergrowth announces our arrival at the Wildschweingehege. The Wildschweingehege isn’t just a home for wild boars. It’s a testament to Berlin’s commitment to its wildlife. The Wildschweingehege has been a part of Volkspark Rehberge since the 1920s. It has housed not only wild boars, but also other species like Damhirsche, Mufflons, and Fasane. In 2015, the Wildschweingehege faced a potential closure after its last boar was euthanized due to old age. Imagine the silence that must have fallen over this enclosure. But the community rallied, and after 15 months, the Wildschweingehege welcomed new wild boars, a gift from the Forstamt Tegel. The Wildschweingehege stands as a symbol of resilience and the enduring connection between Berliners and the natural world. The rustling leaves, the snuffling of the boars, these are the sounds of a city breathing, a reminder of the wild heart that beats within even the most urban of landscapes.
