Ever wonder where to find a beacon of faith right in bustling Back Bay? This is Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine. It is a Catholic shrine dedicated to the adoration of the Eucharist.

Let’s delve into the story of Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine. Its story began not as a Catholic shrine but as a Universalist church. In the 1920s the Second Universalist Society built a church here. They called it the Church of the Redemption.

But times changed. In 1935 the Universalist congregation merged with another church. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston purchased the building. It became an auxiliary chapel for Saint Cecilia Parish.

Then in 1945 Archbishop Cushing made a significant decision. He separated it from Saint Cecilia Parish. He designated it as a shrine for Eucharistic adoration. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were entrusted with its care.

Later in the 1960s Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine became a center for student ministry. Since 1976 the Oblates of the Virgin Mary have been its caretakers. It also houses their house of formation Our Lady of Grace Seminary.

The Oblates of the Virgin Mary are central to Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine. Founded in 1827 by Bruno Lanteri they are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They train young men to become priests and religious brothers. The seminarians actively participate in masses as lectors and altar servers.

Look closely at the architecture. Saint Clement Shrine is built in the Gothic style. Behind the tabernacle you will notice a reredos in the form of a triptych. It is especially prominent during Eucharistic adoration. The triptych features angels holding censers. They are copies of Fra Angelico’s images. Below the angels are Latin words. They translate to This is the Bread which came down from Heaven Behold the Bread of Angels made the food of pilgrims.

Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine is more than just a building. It is a vibrant center of faith. The shrine hosts various groups and activities. Adoration Boston seeks to restore perpetual adoration. The St. Clement Amicizia Cristiana Young Adult Group welcomes young professionals. The Back Bay Mobile Soup Kitchen ministers to the homeless.

Music fills the Shrine. Volunteers form a choir that sings at the 8 pm Sunday Mass. They focus on traditional Christian music. Volunteer singers also lead hymns at the 11 am Mass.

Currently Saint Clement Eucharistic Shrine has been named as a Jubilee Church for the Archdiocese of Boston.
