Gazing up at this striking sculpture, one can’t help but wonder about its meaning. This is Fulcrum, a towering sculpture by American artist John Henry. Fulcrum stands proudly in Eschborn, Germany, a testament to the power of balance and form. John Henry, born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1943, crafted Fulcrum in his Chattanooga studio. The design, inspired by the Constructivist movement and artists like Vladimir Tatlin, showcases a minimalist aesthetic. Six yellow steel plates and beams, varying in width and height, reach skyward. These elements, despite their massive appearance, possess a surprising lightness, emphasized by the vibrant yellow. They intersect and overlap, creating dynamic interior spaces. Fulcrum might appear static at first glance. Its yellow surfaces convey a sense of stability. But as you move around it, the sculpture transforms. It becomes a dynamic bundle of steel, seemingly rotating around an invisible axis. The name “Fulcrum” refers to a pivot point. The sculpture captures a fleeting moment of elements suspended, falling, and rotating in space. Originally displayed at the Blickachsen 3 Biennale in Bad Homburg, Fulcrum captivated the then-mayor of Eschborn, Wilhelm Speckhardt. He was so impressed that he insisted on bringing the sculpture to his city. Now, Fulcrum has become an iconic landmark in Eschborn. It is a testament to John Henry’s skill and vision, a perfect blend of strength and grace.
