Could a simple stele hold the weight of a pivotal moment in Japanese history? Here at the Ōtsu-jō Stele, we unravel a tale of siege and surrender, a story intertwined with the monumental Battle of Sekigahara. The Ōtsu-jō Stele marks the site of Ōtsu Castle, a key player in the tumultuous Sengoku period. In 1600, as the fate of Japan hung in the balance, Ōtsu Castle became a strategic target.

Kyōgoku Takatsugu, brother-in-law of Tokugawa Hidetada, commanded the garrison within Ōtsu Castle’s double-moated walls. Loyal to the Tokugawa clan, Takatsugu faced the formidable forces of Mōri Terumoto and Tachibana Muneshige. The siege commenced, a fierce prelude to the larger conflict brewing at Sekigahara. While samurai clashed and cannons roared, the citizens of Ōtsu, remarkably, treated the siege as a spectacle. Historical accounts suggest they brought picnic baskets and gathered on Mount Hiei, at Mii-dera, to watch the unfolding drama. Imagine the scene: the tension of the battle juxtaposed with the almost festive atmosphere of the onlookers.

Negotiations ensued, culminating in Takatsugu’s surrender. Yet, the surrender of Ōtsu Castle became a footnote in history. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s decisive victory at Sekigahara overshadowed the events at Ōtsu, effectively rendering the castle’s fall inconsequential. The Ōtsu-jō Stele, therefore, stands as a testament to a battle whose outcome was ultimately reversed by the grander narrative of Sekigahara. The Ōtsu-jō Stele reminds us that even in defeat, a story remains. A story of loyalty, strategy, and the unpredictable tides of war. A story etched not just in stone, but in the very fabric of Japanese history.
