“Can you imagine facing prejudice for something you can’t control?” I ask you, pausing as we stand before Aliza. It’s not a building or a monument, but a beacon of hope. Aliza is a young girl who, despite being born with clubfoot, embodies resilience and joy. Her story, however, started with hardship. Aliza was born in Cambodia with bilateral clubfoot. Thankfully, a midwife quickly identified the condition and referred her to the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh. This was just the beginning of Aliza’s journey. You see, in some communities in Cambodia, clubfoot carries a harsh stigma. Some believe it’s a punishment for past deeds. Sadly, Aliza’s family faced this prejudice head-on. Imagine the pain her parents felt when even Aliza’s grandmother refused to help, calling her “abnormal.” Aliza’s mother, determined to support her daughter, made the difficult decision to quit her job. Despite the social isolation and challenges, Aliza’s parents remained dedicated to her treatment at NextSteps Cambodia, a partner of MiracleFeet. Their perseverance paid off. Today, Aliza is a vibrant two-year-old, running around and playing like any other child. Aliza’s story, though rooted in hardship, is ultimately a testament to the power of perseverance and the unwavering love of family. It reminds us that hope and happiness can blossom even in the face of adversity.
