A symphony of art and architecture. That’s the essence of Daehan Gallery, nestled in the hills of Seoul’s Gangbuk district. Daehan Gallery isn’t just a gallery. It’s a harmonious blend of art, residence, and event space, a testament to innovative design inspired by a musical score. The building’s geometry echoes a 1967 sketch by composer Istvan Anhalt, “Symphony of Modules,” discovered in a book by John Cage. This musical inspiration translates into three distinct pavilions rising from a continuous gallery below. Imagine a sheet of water mirroring the sky above. This reflecting pool acts as a unifying element, connecting the pavilions and creating a sense of tranquility. As you approach Daehan Gallery, a bamboo garden wall welcomes you, leading to the entry pavilion. Here, you encounter the water feature at elbow height, reflecting the sky, surrounding vegetation, and the warm patina of the copper walls. Daehan Gallery’s pavilions feature interiors of red and charcoal-stained wood, bathed in natural light filtering through skylight strips. These strips, like musical pauses, bring the space to life, changing with the seasons and the passage of time. Below, in the gallery, light dances through glass lenses embedded in the pool’s base, illuminating the pristine white walls and granite floor. Daehan Gallery’s exterior is clad in custom-patinated copper, a living skin that ages gracefully with the landscape. The building embraces sustainability with geothermal heating and cooling, ensuring environmental harmony. Daehan Gallery is more than just a building. It’s a sensory experience, a place where art, architecture, and nature converge in a symphony of light and space.
