Opened in 2016 Gymnasium Nord initially resided in temporary classrooms. These were simple containers. They served as a temporary solution. The school needed a place to function. The growing student population demanded it. Gymnasium Nord was established to handle the increased demand. Specifically it catered to students from Frankfurt’s northern districts. Finding a suitable permanent site proved challenging. The school eventually settled on a temporary location in Praunheim. This was near the Westhausen cemetery.
The initial container classrooms were later supplemented. A new building was constructed using a modular design. This was a modern and efficient approach. The building’s materials were primarily wood. It was made from prefabricated wooden modules. This allowed for quicker construction. The project was completed in phases. The first phase opened in 2018. A second phase followed a year later. These additions housed classrooms. They also contained administrative areas and teacher facilities.
The architects Raumwerk & Spreen won a design competition. Their concept connected neighboring districts. The design features three buildings. One houses the school. The others house a cafeteria and a sports hall. A green central courtyard supplies natural light. The design uses wood and aluminum. This provides a calming and structured atmosphere. The interior features simple designs. Natural light fills the hallways and classrooms. The school prioritizes student well-being. This includes providing a pleasant learning environment. The materials are carefully chosen. They promote a positive atmosphere.
Gymnasium Nord’s design is more than just practical. It exemplifies innovative construction. The modular design is flexible. It allows for easy expansion or modification. It’s a model for future school constructions. The use of wood is environmentally conscious. The wood-concrete hybrid modules offer excellent insulation. This helps maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. The active concrete floor system contributes to energy efficiency. The entire design demonstrates forward thinking. It prioritizes the well-being of students and teachers. The Gymnasium Nord stands as a testament to innovative and sustainable school architecture. A permanent location is still planned. This will improve the school’s overall presence. For now Gymnasium Nord is a thriving institution. It serves a vital role in the community.
