Opened in 1881 Friedhof Niederrad serves as a peaceful resting place. This Frankfurt am Main cemetery holds a rich history. It’s more than just graves. It’s a living record of the Niederrad neighborhood. Before Friedhof Niederrad existed villagers buried their dead in a churchyard near the Paul-Gerhard-Kirche. Two original gravestones remain. A smaller cemetery was established in 1861 at Haardtwaldplatz. Today that area is a children’s playground. Parts of the old cemetery wall and four gravestones remain. They are protected as historical monuments. This older cemetery proved too small. Thus the current Friedhof Niederrad was created. It sits on 46 hectares of land. It boasts approximately 3200 graves. A neo-Romanesque chapel was built in 1901. This L-shaped structure offers 45 seats. It too is a protected landmark. Two monuments honor those lost in wars. One represents the Turngesellschaft. The other memorializes the war prisoners’ association. Explore the grounds. Discover the stories behind the many memorials. Reflect on the lives lived and legacies left. Friedhof Niederrad whispers stories of Frankfurt’s past. It continues to serve as a place of remembrance and quiet contemplation.
