What secrets does the Buji River hold? Here, before the Buji River Bridge, we uncover a story of transformation. The Buji River Bridge stands as a testament to Shenzhen’s efforts to revitalize this vital waterway. The Buji River, flowing through Luohu, Shenzhen’s oldest district, was once a natural stream. Over time, it became a polluted urban canal, struggling with both drought and extreme rainfall. The Luohu government recognized the need for change. They sought to improve the river’s water quality and overall management. This revitalization project included the transformation of surrounding urban areas and the redevelopment of industrial plots. The Buji River couldn’t simply be returned to its original state due to the dense urban environment. Instead, a series of smaller interventions were planned. These aimed to gradually improve water quality and increase the river’s capacity. The ultimate goal was to transform the Buji River into a valuable urban resource. The river’s current water system combines wastewater and stormwater. Various pollutants, from sewage and industrial waste to surface drainage, flow directly into the Buji River. To address this, a three-part strategy was devised. The Riverfront, Riverbed, and River basin would be temporarily separated to allow for a controlled revitalization process. Once each part met the required standards, they would be reintegrated. The Riverfront project focuses on managing the river’s fluctuating water levels through a series of diversified sections adapted to the surroundings. The Riverbed project introduces a second water system to separate rainwater from the existing river. This creates distinct zones: squares and parks for water storage in the upper catchment, open landscapes for water retention and purification in the middle section, and widened canals and amphibious boulevards for efficient drainage in the south. The Riverbasin project transforms the infrastructure leading to the Buji River into a green-blue network. This involves open and underground canals for increased collection and storage, wadis to delay water discharge, and amphibious streets for rapid drainage. The Buji River Bridge is a crucial part of this transformation. It’s a symbol of Shenzhen’s dedication to creating a sustainable and vibrant urban environment. The Buji River’s journey reminds us that even in the heart of a bustling metropolis, nature can be restored and celebrated.
