“Why is it called Shipai?”, a curious visitor asks. The history of Shipai Street reveals layers of time. It blends the modern with the echoes of ancient villages.

Established in 1987 Shipai Street wasn’t always known by that name. It began as Gangding Street. Later that same year it was renamed Shipai Street. However its roots run far deeper than the late 20th century.

Though named Shipai this area is often referred to as Gangding. This is because it sits on Shipai Gangding. The street’s initial name was Gangding Street. The Guangzhou Metro Line 3 uses “Gangding Station” for its stop here. So many locals still call it “Gangding.” They use Shipai to refer to the area near Shipai Village.

Imagine it. Once Shipai was a collection of villages. Now Shipai Street encompasses 23 communities. In 2020 the resident population stood at 177,800.

Shipai Street covers 4.3 square kilometers. That is about 1.7 square miles. It is a vibrant mix of residential areas and bustling commercial hubs.

In the realm of commerce Shipai Street is known for its IT products. Here you find a concentration of computer markets. The list includes Taipingyang Digital Plaza and Tianhe Computer City. Also find Nanfang Science and Technology Plaza and Buynow. Add to that the expansive Outlook Digital Plaza.

Venture to Shipai West Road. Discover a whole strip dedicated to IT products. Explore Shipai East Commercial Street for diverse shopping options. For leisure Tianhe Entertainment Plaza offers recreation. Modern Department Store Gangding Store adds to the retail mix. It is one of Guangzhou’s seven Golden Bell Department Stores.

Navigating Shipai Street is easy. Several major roads intersect here. Huangpu Avenue and Zhongshan Avenue are key arteries. Tianhe Road and Tianshou Road provide access. Tianrun Road and Tianhe North Road are also important. Longkou East Road and Longkou West Road connect different areas. Longkou Middle Road and Shipai East Road guide you. Finally Shipai West Road completes the network.

Education thrives within Shipai Street. Several high schools are located here. Among them are the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University. Guangzhou No. 113 Middle School also calls this area home. The High School Affiliated to Jinan University adds to the academic atmosphere.

Elementary schools also play a vital role. Shipai Primary School and Longkou West Primary School educate the young.

Though modern now Shipai Street carries echoes of the past. It was once Shipai Village. The village evolved over centuries. It transformed from rural settlements to a modern urban street. Its story reflects Guangzhou’s rapid development. The blend of old and new makes Shipai Street a unique place to explore. It is a place where history and progress intertwine.
