Ever heard of a radio station born in a broom closet? That’s the incredible story of WSIA-FM. Right here on Staten Island WSIA-FM began its journey in the mid-1970s. A small group of students passionate about radio took over a broom closet. They ran wires to the cafeteria. They started playing records. This unlikely beginning led them to apply for an FM license. They received a construction permit.
WSIA-FM however wasn’t built overnight. It took years of hard work. Another group of students worked to secure funding. In 1980 a General Manager was hired. Securing an antenna site from the Archdiocese of New York proved challenging. Installing phone lines to the remote transmitter was another hurdle. Finally on August 31 1981 WSIA-FM began broadcasting regularly. This was a huge accomplishment for the College of Staten Island and its students. It marked just the beginning of WSIA-FM’s impact.
Countless students trained at WSIA-FM over the years. Many went on to successful careers in radio. For others WSIA-FM remained a cherished memory from their college days. The station itself evolved. Its studios and offices expanded. The operating budget grew significantly from a humble $8800 to over $100000 annually. A key milestone was the College’s decision in 1985 to fund the General Manager’s salary. Previously it was paid from student fees.
Programming at WSIA-FM also changed over time. Two things remained constant: innovation and community service. WSIA-FM built strong relationships. It worked with record companies musicians and local artists. It connected with clubs and promoters. The station prides itself on its commitment to showcasing new and emerging artists. It provides a platform for local and underrepresented voices. It actively promotes Staten Island community events.
In August 2011 WSIA-FM celebrated 30 years on the air. Today WSIA-FM broadcasts online at www.wsia.fm. This makes its programming accessible worldwide. The mission of WSIA-FM is to train students in broadcasting. It aims to provide education and entertainment to the College of Staten Island Staten Island and the world. Students gain confidence and valuable experience. The station continues to be a vital part of the community providing unique and diverse programming. WSIA-FM a testament to the power of passion and perseverance is more than a radio station. It’s a vibrant part of Staten Island’s history.
