Founded in 1945 New Mount Zion Church of God in Christ began humbly in the home of Deacon and Sister Lewis Hinton. This devout couple at 439 Ottawa Street contacted Bishop C L Anderson. They requested a pastor for their new church. Elder DeLewis Sanders became their first pastor. Under his leadership the church thrived. Many souls were saved. The 1950s brought an economic crisis to Detroit. Many members sought work elsewhere. This led to a decline in church membership. Despite this New Mount Zion prospered and recovered. The church continued to grow. In September 1963 Elder B T Stephen recommended Elder George M Bennett. He believed Bennett was qualified to lead the church. State Bishop Charles I Johnson officially installed Bennett as pastor in October. During an August 1981 meeting members discussed buying a larger building. The former Evangelical Covenant Church at 188 West Muskegon Avenue was for sale. Members were enthusiastic. They pledged money for the purchase. In October 1982 they bought the building. The inaugural service was held on November 6th. New Mount Zion celebrated its Golden Anniversary in September 1995. They held a mortgage burning ceremony in 1998. This was during their 21st Annual Old Fashion Christian Family Reunion. After 43 years of service George M Bennett passed away on March 10 2007. Elder Duane E Bennett was installed as pastor on June 8 2007 by Bishop Marvin C Pryor. New Mount Zion Church of God in Christ stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community.
