Imagine being a student navigating university life. The Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss or AStA stands as your advocate. What is the AStA? It is your voice within Muenster University.
The AStA represents all students. They address student concerns. Think of it as your student government. It is elected yearly by the student parliament.
The AStA building is located at Schlossplatz 1. It is open to all students. Its doors are open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm. On Fridays it closes earlier at 2pm. AStA is composed of chairpersons, student advisors and affiliated projects.
AStA offers various services. They provide consultation sessions free of charge. They function as a political body. Their goal is to improve student conditions. They work to make your university experience better.
The student parliament elects the AStA. It’s the highest student committee. They make legal adjustments. Elections occur every year usually in early June. Voter turnout is unfortunately low. It hovers around 20%. You can vote in almost every university building. Cafeterias also have ballot boxes. All you need is your student card.
The AStA also has autonomous departments. These represent women and LGBTQ+ students. They also support disabled and chronically ill students. They ensure everyone has a voice.
Every week, the AStA meets in a meeting open to all. Meetings occur each Monday at 12pm. You can find them in the “Plenumsraum”. This assembly hall is on the first floor of the AStA building.
You can also get involved with political lists. These lists are similar to political parties. Learn about their campaigns through flyers and homepages. Your vote matters. It ensures the parliament represents you.
The AStA isn’t just an organization. It’s a community. It is where students shape their university experience. It’s your platform to make a difference. It supports student projects. They offer diverse services. Political education is a key principle. Antiracism and antisexism are fundamental. The AStA in Muenster is more than a committee. It is a commitment to students.
