Anchored in the earth before us stands the Aurora Akimbo Sculpture. It’s more than just metal; it’s a story. The Aurora Akimbo Sculpture isn’t one piece, but three. These large sculptural elements rise 24 feet above the ground. They’re made of molded fiberglass with a structural steel skeleton. The sculpture sits at the northern edge of Expo Park, aligning perfectly with Alameda Boulevard and the park’s bike path. This placement ensures visibility for both park users and those driving along Alameda Boulevard. Think of it as a vibrant gateway, welcoming people to Aurora. It draws attention to Aurora’s parks and recreational facilities. The Aurora Akimbo Sculpture was designed by David Griggs, a Colorado artist with over 35 years of experience. He holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Griggs has worked in various roles within the art world, including gallery manager, museum preparatory, and studio artist. He has created over 45 commissioned artworks across the United States and Canada. The Aurora Akimbo Sculpture is inspired by the activities of park users. It starts with a large abstract “A” for Aurora. Then these monumental forms seem to cartwheel across the park landscape, as if shedding their inhibitions. The artist envisioned the sculptures delighting in their physical form. He saw them participating in the playful activities of the park.
