Opened in 2001 Ocean View Hills School initially occupied temporary buildings. This was a significant event. It marked the first new school in the San Ysidro Elementary School District in 24 years. Imagine the excitement the community felt. The school’s location near Brown Field Municipal Airport caused delays. The San Diego City Council debated converting the airfield into a cargo airport. This debate significantly impacted the construction timeline for Ocean View Hills School’s permanent building. Ultimately the plan was rejected. Changes in district leadership also contributed to the delay. Construction finally began in October 2004. The new buildings were completed in December 2005. Ocean View Hills School quickly became popular. Overcrowding became a problem within a year of the permanent building opening. Portable classrooms and extra staff were added to alleviate this issue. The construction of Vista Del Mar Elementary School in the Ocean View Hills neighborhood also helped to ease the overcrowding. Today Ocean View Hills School stands proudly on 20 acres. An additional 5 acres are dedicated to parking. Seven buildings house over 40 classrooms. These classrooms are equipped with advanced technology. This includes interactive whiteboards wireless microphones and high-resolution document cameras. The school also boasts a vibrant after-school performing arts program. They put on a full musical production annually. Ocean View Hills School is more than just a school. It’s a testament to community perseverance and a vibrant hub of learning and the arts in San Diego.
