Did you know that O.M.V. Milano Smistamento’s locomotive shed and marshalling yards were opened in 1931? They still serve as Milan’s main freight yard today. The O.M.V. Milano Smistamento has a rich history.
Originally, the O.M.V. Milano Smistamento shed had two roundhouses. These were linked by a large repair shop. Later, the westernmost roundhouse was replaced. Another repair shop was added. This allowed diesel and electric locomotives to be serviced in separate buildings.
In the late 1990s, a group of railwaymen began repainting electric locomotives. They used heritage liveries. Both the locomotives and the painters became popular among enthusiasts. As these old locomotives were withdrawn, the group needed a formal organization. This organization would preserve the locomotives and organize open days.
Thus, the ARSMS association was born. From 2006, annual open days have been held at the O.M.V. Milano Smistamento shed. These usually take place in March or April. The open days focus on heritage modern traction. For example, one year featured 19 electrics, 4 diesels, 2 EMUs, and 4 DMUs.
Steam locomotives have also been present. One year, seven locomotives were present. Six of these were in steam. This was the highest number of steam locomotives at a single event since at least 1986.
One notable locomotive was DR no. 50 3673. This 2-10-0 engine is owned by a German association. It was leased to the Verbano Express Italian group. They used it mainly for excursions in Switzerland. This was only the second time a German steam locomotive had entered Italy.
Other locomotives present included FS 625 100. This is a standard FS mixed traffic 2-6-0. FS 880 051 also appeared. This is a standard FS branch line 2-6-0T. FS 740 038, a standard FS freight 2-8-0, was also there. Plus FS 685 196, a standard FS passenger 2-6-2.
The smallest locomotive present was FNM no. 200 05. It was built in 1883. It is the oldest preserved locomotive in Italy. It is cared for at the FNM shed in Novate Milanese. FNM 200 05 and FS 625 100 ran short demonstration runs.
Once, an excursion to Verona was powered by FS 685 196. It consisted of three coaches and a bogie van. The engine performed splendidly maintaining an average of 55 mph.
The O.M.V. Milano Smistamento has played a crucial role in Milan’s railway history. It continues to preserve railway heritage.
