Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Mumbai, Chabad House Mumbai stands as a beacon of resilience and remembrance. Chabad House Mumbai, also known as Nariman House, isn’t just a building; it’s a story etched in courage and tragedy. This five-story landmark, nestled in Colaba, served as a spiritual haven, a Chabad house offering solace and community to Jewish travelers and locals alike. Run by Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, Chabad House Mumbai opened its doors in 2003, becoming the first of its kind in Mumbai. It offered a place of worship, a synagogue where prayers echoed, and educational opportunities. It was more than just a religious center. It was a home away from home for Israelis backpacking through India, seeking respite from their everyday lives. The Holtzbergs welcomed everyone, fostering a sense of belonging. They provided drug prevention services and a hostel for those in need. They understood the needs of weary travelers, offering a space where they could relax and reconnect. Chabad House Mumbai became a vibrant hub, hosting Torah classes, weddings, and Shabbat gatherings. The Holtzbergs also extended their support to other local synagogues, raising funds and helping build a mikvah. Tragically, in November 2008, Chabad House Mumbai became a target of terror. During the Mumbai attacks, the building was besieged, and six lives were lost, including Gavriel and Rivka, who was six months pregnant. Their two-year-old son, Moshe, miraculously survived, rescued by his nanny, Sandra Samuel. The world mourned, but the spirit of Chabad House Mumbai did not break. Today, Chabad House Mumbai stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit. Renamed Nariman Light House, it continues to serve the community, a symbol of hope and remembrance. A memorial now graces the building, honoring the victims of the 2008 attacks. The fifth floor, where the Holtzbergs lived, has been painted white, a poignant reminder of their presence. The legacy of Chabad House Mumbai lives on, a story of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
