“Princess Chulabhorn? Never heard of her,” you might say. Today, we’re exploring a place named in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, the youngest daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. This is จุฬาภรณ์วลัยลักษณ์ 1.

Princess Chulabhorn was born in Bangkok in 1957. Her name “Chulabhorn” was a tribute to her great-grandfather King Chulalongkorn the Great. She has always shown a keen interest in science and mathematics. At a young age, she also nurtured her artistic talents and mastered playing the piano.

She studied hard and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organic Chemistry. Later, she got a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Mahidol University in 1985.

The Princess is heavily involved in promoting scientific research. She also regularly gives awards and prizes. She even held a guest lecturer position in chemistry at Mahidol University. The Princess serves as president of the Chulabhorn Research Institute. UNESCO awarded her the Einstein Medal in 1986 for her efforts in promoting scientific collaboration. She was the first Asian to be invited to join the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom as an Honorary Fellow.

In 1982, Princess Chulabhorn married Virayudh Tishyasarin. He was an officer in the Royal Thai Air Force. With her father’s permission, she retained her royal title. They later divorced.

Princess Chulabhorn has visited many countries. She went to Germany to further her cancer research. The Princess also visited Japan and met with the Emperor and Empress. She also went to Nagoya University to participate in a discussion between the “HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Science” in Thailand and the “School of Medicine” in the university. She also officially visited Israel and the United States of America.

Princess Chulabhorn’s contributions extend beyond science. She is a classically trained musician and a dazzling dancer.
