Did you ever hear of a church that started with a school? Right here, before the Assembly of Gods Church, stands a testament to the incredible work of Mark and Huldah Buntain. This Canadian couple arrived in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1954. Touched by the plight of the city’s impoverished children, they established the first Assembly of God Church School in 1964. The school began with 200 students. It offered education, a midday meal, and a nurturing environment. This act of compassion laid the foundation for the Assembly of Gods Church we see today. The church’s history is intertwined with this school. It grew from a desire to serve the community and offer not just spiritual guidance, but practical support. The Buntains’ love extended beyond education. They initiated a feeding program for the poor in Kolkata’s streets and slums. Today, the Assembly of Gods Church thrives, holding over 18 weekend services in eight different languages. It continues to honor the Buntains’ legacy by serving the community in various ways. The church also supports a home for underprivileged children, a vocational training center, and a shelter for daughters of sex-trafficking victims. Thousands still benefit from the feeding program established decades ago by Mark and Huldah Buntain. The Assembly of Gods Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living embodiment of the Buntains’ vision: Building a better India by building better boys and girls.
