“Freedom” wasn’t just a word. It was a battle cry that resonates still at Heroes of Polytechnic. This street is dedicated to the victims of the Athens Polytechnic School uprising. It marks a pivotal moment in Greek history.

In November 1973, Greece was under the iron fist of a military junta led by dictator G. Papadopoulos. This regime had crushed individual freedoms. Political parties were dissolved. Citizens were exiled, imprisoned, and tortured for their beliefs. The junta even meddled in student unions. It banned student elections at universities. This sparked outrage among students. They yearned for democracy.

On November 14, 1973, students at the Athens Polytechnic School rose up against the junta. They barricaded themselves inside. They began broadcasting through an independent radio station. A student, George Kyrlakis, built the transmitter in mere hours. The station’s message became legendary. “This is the Polytechnic School speaking!” it declared. “People of Greece, the Polytechnic School is the flagship of our struggle. It is the flagship of your struggle. It is our common struggle against dictatorship and for the restoration of democracy.” Maria Damanaki, Dimitris Papachristos, and Miltos Charalambidis were the voices of the uprising.

The students demands were simple. Bread. Education. Liberty. Their rallying cry echoed through the streets of Athens. The junta responded with brutal force.

On November 17, 1973, the government sent in the army. Tanks crashed through the gates of the Athens Polytechnic School. Soldiers stormed the building. They arrested and injured countless students. It is alleged that 2-3 students who were behind the gate were crushed. The violence was swift and merciless.

The Athens Polytechnic School Uprising was a watershed moment. It was the first major act of popular defiance against the junta. Although the uprising was crushed, it exposed the regime’s brutality. It galvanized the Greek people. The dictatorship finally collapsed on July 23, 1974.

Today, Heroes of Polytechnic Street stands as a testament to the courage of those students. They fought for freedom and democracy. Their sacrifice paved the way for a new era in Greece. Remember their courage. Their struggle changed the course of history.
