Xibianmen Bridge. A triangular intersection in the heart of Beijing. This bridge isn’t just a crossing. It’s a landmark steeped in history. Xibianmen Bridge stands at the junction of Fuxingmen South Street and Xuanwumen West Street. Xuanwumen West Street splits on the west side of the bridge. One part becomes a section of the Second Ring Road. The other connects to Lianhua Pond East Road. Both eventually lead to Tianning Temple Bridge. The bridge itself is roughly triangular. It holds a unique distinction: the untouched remnants of Beijing’s inner city wall lie at its center. Xibianmen Bridge takes its name from the Xibianmen gate, once located northwest of the bridge. Imagine the bustling activity around this area during the Ming Dynasty. Xibianmen was one of seven outer city gates. It connected the inner city to the growing population outside. The gate itself vanished long ago, demolished in 1952. But the name lives on, echoing the past. Even the nearby Xibianmen City Wall Relics Park, though not directly related to the outer city gate, carries the name. The park, surrounding a section of the Ming Dynasty city wall, stands as a testament to time and change. Within the park stands the “Capital Construction Century Monument.” This 21-meter-high sculpture celebrates the contributions of the Youth Assault Teams to Beijing’s development. It’s a symbol of progress, juxtaposed against the ancient wall, a striking contrast at Xibianmen Bridge. The area northeast of Xibianmen Bridge was once a wetland called Taiping Lake. It has since disappeared, swallowed by the city’s expansion. This constant evolution is part of Beijing’s story. Xibianmen Bridge, with its layers of history, stands as a witness.
