Marvelous Milan’s masterpiece awaits you. Before us stands the Chiesa di San Maurizio e Santa Margherita. A truly breathtaking sight.
This isn’t just any church. This is the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore. It’s often called the “Sistine Chapel of Milan”. Its beauty rivals even the famous Duomo. You might think the exterior is rather modest. But step inside and prepare to be amazed.
Imagine sixteenth-century Milan. The city buzzed with life. The most important convent for women was here. Construction of this very church began in 1503. It took fifteen years to complete. The building was initially divided. One part for the nuns and another for the faithful. This separation lasted until the late eighteenth century.
The interior is a riot of color. Not a single inch is left undecorated. Paintings mosaics and glittering gold cover everything. Pillars ceilings and walls are adorned with intricate designs. The frescoes are stunning. They date back to the sixteenth century. Artists like Bernardino Luini and his son Aurelio worked here. Also Campi and Peterzano contributed their talents. The scenes are primarily religious. Saints angels Jesus carrying the cross and the crucifixion are all depicted with vibrant detail.
Notice the organ. It’s in the area once reserved for the nuns. Built in 1554 by Antegnati it’s still functional. The organ’s mechanical transmission is a testament to its masterful construction. It features a keyboard of 50 notes and a pedalboard with 20.
The rich colors are everywhere. The stained-glass windows add to the splendor. The chapel of the nuns is particularly striking. The frescoes here depict scenes from the life of Saint Catherine and more.
The frescoes weren’t just a decorative flourish. Ippolita Sforza and her husband Alessandro Bentivoglio were the main patrons. Ippolita’s daughter lived as a nun in this very monastery. They helped to create this incredible artistic legacy.
The Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is more than a church. It’s a testament to faith art and the enduring spirit of Milan. A place where history art and faith converge in breathtaking beauty.
