Did you ever hear of a school transforming into a wall-to-wall Montessori experience? Right here, before the former Palmer School, now known as Palmer Park Preparatory Academy, such a transformation is underway. Palmer Park Prep stands as a premier Montessori school, nestled in Detroit’s University District. Originally a traditional school, Palmer Park Prep embarked on a journey to become a fully immersive Montessori environment in 2024. The school, serving PreK through 8th grade, has roughly 430 students. They offer traditional curriculum programs for 6th through 8th grade for the 2024-25 school year. What makes this school so unique is its blended Montessori classrooms. Multiple grade levels learn together. This collaborative approach fosters creativity, discovery, and exploration. For the 2023-2024 school year, Palmer Park Prep hosted six PreK/K classrooms, four 1st-3rd grade classrooms, and three 4th-6th grade classrooms. They even had a dedicated band classroom for 7th and 8th graders. Each year, Palmer Park Prep phases out one traditional grade, bringing them closer to their goal. The school expects to achieve a complete wall-to-wall Montessori experience by the 2028-29 school year. Palmer Park Prep is more than just a school. It is a vital part of the University District, boasting dedicated staff and an involved PTA. Together, they strive to create a top-notch learning environment. Here, students are encouraged to become relentless, intellectual, successful, and exemplary. Their motto? “#P3APremier”.
