“Bronco Arches?” It is what they were known as back in 1960. I am referring to the I-25 Bridge over the South Platte River. It is also known as the Broncos Bridge.

Let’s dive into the story of this Denver landmark. It has been around since its initial construction in 1951. After the Denver Broncos began playing football in the adjacent Mile High Stadium in 1960 the steel arches supporting the bridge superstructure became known as the Bronco Arches.

Can you imagine over 200,000 vehicles crossing the Broncos Bridge per day? After years of service the bridge deteriorated and needed replacement.

The Colorado Department of Transportation CDOT designed a replacement bridge to accommodate traffic. It now has four through lanes in each direction. Acceleration lanes and on and off-ramps were added.

Lawrence Construction Co was the selected contractor. They requested CDOT consider a value-engineering VE proposal. Summit Engineering Group prepared it. The proposal would enhance constructability and accelerate the bridge construction schedule.

Working together CDOT the contractor and Summit provided designs. These designs maximized the use of precast concrete. The precast concrete reduced the number of construction stages. It shortened the schedule. It greatly reduced the impact on existing traffic.

CDOT approved the VE proposal. They promptly issued notice-to-proceed. Summit became the Engineer of Record for the bridge.

Summit’s innovative solution featured a completely precast rigid frame. This enhanced the structural efficiency and stiffness of the system. It optimized the use of precast prestressed concrete elements. The piers were all precast. They consisted of slender arched shafts connected with a strut at mid-height. Summit prepared all the designs. They cooperated with the contractor and CDOT.

Additionally DOTI rehabilitated two pedestrian bridges along the South Platte River Trail. This rehabilitation work will extend the service life of the bridges. It is funded through the Bridge Maintenance Program.

The Bronco Pedestrian Bridge connects Empower Field at Mile High to 1st Street. People use it to access the RTD Light Rail Station. Work included removal and replacement of expansion joints. Concrete deck repairs minor concrete repairs bollard installation and bridge painting took place.

The 19th Street Pedestrian Bridge is just south of 19th Street. It is near Commons Park and Denver Skatepark. This work included bridge joint replacement. Concrete deck repairs and pavement repairs occurred. Deck drain replacement pedestrian railing repairs and bollards were added. The timber walkway was removed. Spot painting was done. An anchorage system under the bridge was created.

Currently the Bronco Pedestrian Bridge is partially closed. The northern half of the bridge is closed. Access over the bridge is maintained. It is restricted to 15′ width.

The Broncos Bridge stands as a testament to Denver’s history and progress. It is a symbol of connection for all who pass over it.
