Doesn’t the name Sportfreunde Ricklingen sound like a team of friends? The Sportfreunde Ricklingen von 1906 e. V. are indeed a sports club. Locals often call them SF Ricklingen. This club is based right here in Hannover-Ricklingen.

SF Ricklingen has a rich history. It goes back to 1906. The club started as Freie Turnerschaft Ricklingen. They joined the Arbeiterturnerbund that same year. By 1913, they had football and handball sections too.

In 1930, SF Ricklingen won a championship. They beat Freie Sportvereinigung Lehe 4:1. This win qualified them for a national tournament. But, they lost to Bahrenfelder SV in the first round.

The Nazi regime banned the club in 1933. However, some members kept playing secretly. They called themselves Staubwolke meaning dust cloud. After World War II, members rebuilt the club. In October 1945, they were allowed to re-establish. They took the name Sportfreunde Ricklingen. Karl Behnsen led the club until 1969. Football became the main sport.

In 1950, SF Ricklingen reached the Amateurliga 3. Their youth team won the Lower Saxony Cup in 1954. In 1958, they were promoted to the Amateuroberliga Niedersachsen. This was then the second-highest league. They stayed there until 1964.

Rainer Behrends became the coach in 1986. In 1993, the team was promoted to the Landesliga West. They were unbeaten that season. Friedo Schwuchow and Gerald Krause scored 62 goals together. SF Ricklingen also won the Lower Saxony Cup in 1992 and 1993. They qualified for the DFB-Pokal which is the German Cup. They reached the third round in 1992/93.

In 1994, SF Ricklingen qualified for the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen. They won the league in 1996. This led to promotion to the Regionalliga Nord. At that time, SF Ricklingen were seen as number two in the city behind Hannover 96.

Dieter Schatzschneider became the coach. In 1996/97, they finished eleventh in the Regionalliga Nord. A home game against Hannover 96 drew 23,446 fans. That is still a club record.

The club faced financial problems. They were relegated from the Regionalliga in 1999. Chairman Friedel Most called the Regionalliga years a mistake. He said it was too expensive for a club in Hannover.

In recent years, SF Ricklingen has faced challenges. They have played in lower leagues. In 2023, the club went into administration. Despite these difficulties, SF Ricklingen remains an important part of Hannover-Ricklingen.

The home ground of SF Ricklingen is the Beekestadion. It can hold 3,000 spectators. Some matches were played in the Niedersachsenstadion during the Regionalliga years. Today, SF Ricklingen shares the Beekestadion with the Hannover Grizzlies.
