This wasn’t just any church. It was the culmination of a dream. In October 1940 a group of Christians gathered in a Burbank home. They craved freedom in missionary support. They longed for a space to worship together. They legally incorporated as Calvary Baptist Church of Burbank on May 23 1941. Seventy-six charter members strong they began their journey. Their first pastor Dr Stanley H Bailes guided them.
Their desire for a permanent home led them to purchase a lot. It was at the corner of S Glenoaks Blvd and Elmwood Ave. Mayor Walter F Hinton himself spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony. It was a time of war. Young men and materials were scarce. Building the church required ingenuity and volunteer work. But their dedication shone through.
