Did you know that Gilo holds a secret from the Iron Age? Right here in this bustling neighborhood archaeologists unearthed a small planned settlement. This was Gilo’s ancient ancestor dating back to 1200-1000 BCE. Imagine the lives lived here centuries ago. These early Israelites built dwellings along the perimeter of the site. They also created large yards perhaps sheep pens. Their houses featured a unique four-room design. It included a courtyard divided by stone pillars a rectangular back room and rooms along the courtyard. This distinctive style is a hallmark of Iron Age Israelite architecture. The discovery of a possible fortified defense tower reveals a glimpse into their security concerns.

Gilo’s history extends far beyond its ancient roots. It sits on a hilltop in southwestern East Jerusalem. This location offers stunning views but also a strategic position. It’s separated from Beit Jala by a deep gorge. The Tunnels Highway to Gush Etzion runs beneath it. The settlement of Har Gilo stands on a nearby peak. Beit Safafa and Sharafat are to its north while Bethlehem lies to the south.

The modern Gilo you see today is much younger. It was established in 1973. Its creation involved the expropriation of land from Palestinian villages. The land originally belonged to Beit Safafa Beit Jala and Sharafat. The modern Gilo’s growth has created a wedge between Jerusalem and Beit Jala-Bethlehem. This expansion has sparked significant international debate. Many countries view Gilo as an illegal settlement. Israel however considers it a legitimate neighborhood within Jerusalem. The debate reflects the larger conflict over land ownership and sovereignty.

Gilo today is a vibrant community. In 2017 it had a population of around 30900 mostly Jewish inhabitants. The community is a mix of religious and secular Jews with a growing Haredi population. Gilo has played a significant role in absorbing Jewish immigrants. Many who first arrived in the country’s immigrant hostel in Gilo chose to make it their home. From Iran Syria France and South America people have found a place in this community. Since the 1990s the neighborhood has absorbed 15% of all Soviet Jewish immigrants who settled in Jerusalem. Today that hostel is home to an urban kibbutz Beit Yisrael.

Gilo offers many amenities. It boasts 35 synagogues a large community center and Park Gilo with a fantastic adventure playground for children. There are also institutions like Beit Or a hostel for autistic young adults and the Ilan home for handicapped adults. But Gilo’s history also includes conflict. From 2000 Beit Jala was used to launch attacks against Gilo. A concrete barrier and bulletproof windows were installed in response. The attacks subsided after Operation Defensive Shield. The barrier was eventually removed in 2010 after years of relative peace. The area unfortunately still bears the scars of conflict. The bus bombing at Patt Junction tragically killed 17 residents of Gilo. This tragic event reminds us of the painful history of this complex place.

So as you stand here in Gilo remember that this neighborhood is more than just houses and streets. Gilo’s story is woven into the fabric of Jerusalem. It represents a blend of ancient history modern life and ongoing political tension. It is a place where the past present and future collide. It is truly a place to explore and contemplate.
