Once a grand imperial palace, Daikaku-ji Temple emanates an aura of tranquility. You might be surprised to know that Daikaku-ji Temple wasn’t always a place of worship. It began as the Saga-in, a magnificent palace built for Emperor Saga in 814 CE. Legend has it that Emperor Saga, seeking to quell a devastating epidemic, meticulously hand-copied the revered Heart Sutra on Kobo Daishi’s advice. This very sutra, carefully preserved, is displayed every six decades at Daikaku-ji Temple. Imagine the echoes of history as you stand before it. After Emperor Saga’s passing, his daughter transformed the palace into Daikaku-ji Temple in 876 CE, forever intertwining it with imperial lineage. The temple became a sanctuary for emperors seeking solace and spiritual guidance. Daikaku-ji Temple is also home to the serene Osawa Pond, a man-made lake predating even the temple. Picture yourself on a boat, gliding across the pond’s mirrored surface as Emperor Saga once did, marveling at the moon’s reflection. The meticulously crafted landscape, inspired by the legendary Dongting Lake in China, transports you to another era. This haven of natural beauty, a testament to artistry and imperial grandeur, continues to captivate visitors even today.
