Whispers of faith echo through time. Right here stands Getsemani Baptist Church a testament to unwavering devotion. Getsemani Baptist Church wasn’t always a grand structure. It began humbly in 1929 as a small mission in the home of Mother Florence Felder. Nine believers formed the core. They were Reverend and Sister McClotton Deacon and Sister Archie Hopkins Sister Sadie Beal Brother Willie Floyd Brother George Williams and Deacon and Sister Honeycutt. Sister Sadie Beal named it Getsemani thinking of the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed.
The early days were challenging. Getsemani Baptist Church initially met in a small storefront on Third Avenue in the Bronx. The space was cramped only one aisle one entrance one exit and a single vent for air. There was no baptismal pool. The First Union Baptist Church graciously allowed them to use their pool. An old icebox served as the pulpit. Even rent payments were a struggle. Sometimes the landlord would padlock the doors. But every Sunday Pastor Ghee and dedicated deacons found a way to open the church for services.
Getsemani Baptist Church grew. In 1940 it became an incorporated church body. In 1944 they purchased a building on Washington Avenue. Their membership swelled to 1500. A fire destroyed their new building just before they were to move in. A nearby Methodist church offered their sanctuary until repairs were complete. Getsemani Baptist Church faced adversity but persevered.
The church saw many pastors. Reverend Ernest William Ghee was the first. Reverend Taft Miller followed. He established several ministries including Gospel choruses a hospitality club and a male chorus. Reverend Milton A Cephous was installed in 1977. He ordained ten deacons. Reverend Torrence Robinson became pastor in 1983. Under his leadership the church grew significantly. He introduced a prison ministry an anti-substance abuse program and expanded ministries for women and youth. Getsemani Baptist Church also developed a thriving food pantry and community outreach programs.
