On December 22 1975 a significant event unfolded. The cornerstone of Sankt-Oliver-Kirche was laid. This wasn’t just another church in Hanover. It was a testament to the growing Catholic community in Laatzen.

Laatzen a town largely Lutheran since the Reformation experienced a Catholic influx. This was due to industrialization the Messegelände and post-war displacement. Initially Laatzen Catholics attended St Bernward Church. Later they were part of the St Michael parish. The need for a dedicated church in Laatzen became clear. St Mathilde Church was built and consecrated in 1938.

But Laatzen grew. New districts needed a central church. Hence Sankt-Oliver-Kirche. It was consecrated on August 27 1977 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen. It became the parish church in 1982.

Sankt-Oliver-Kirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a striking example of modern architecture. Designed by Wolfgang Rauck it’s a towerless hexagonal structure. The lower level is brick the upper level exposed concrete. The stained-glass windows create a serene atmosphere. Claus Kilian’s artistic elements enhance the spiritual experience. The wooden-lined tent-like roof adds warmth.

A significant part of Sankt-Oliver-Kirche is its organ. Built by Siegfried Sauer it was consecrated in 1985 by Bishop Josef Homeyer. Its 22 registers create a rich sound.

The church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a community hub. The parish engages in social and charitable activities. It even oversees St Mathilde Kindergarten founded in 1947.

Sankt-Oliver-Kirche in Laatzen is a vibrant place. It reflects the faith and resilience of the Catholic community. It’s a space for worship reflection and fellowship for all who enter its doors. It’s a story of growth community and faith embodied in its beautiful architecture and active parish.
