Was Dinmore named after a hill? Maybe. Dinmore, here in Ipswich, Queensland, might be named after Dinmore Hill in Herefordshire, England. Or perhaps it comes from the Welsh word “Dinmawr,” meaning “great hill.” The railway station, established in 1884, was one of the newest on the line. That same year, advertisements touted forty-seven building allotments in Dinmore Township. These lots were conveniently located near the New Chum Coal Mine and a short walk from the station. Three years later, another 140 business and building sites went up for sale. Dinmore wasn’t always bustling. One of the earliest structures was the Baptist Church, built between the late 1870s and early 1880s. The Dinmore State School followed in 1891, and the Methodist Church opened its doors in 1901. Coal mining might have started things off, but brickworks and potteries soon became important industries. Dinmore was originally part of Moreton Shire. Then, in 1949, it became a suburb of Ipswich. You can still sense a rural charm, despite the major roads that intersect here: the Ipswich Motorway, the Cunningham Highway, and the Warrego Highway. Brisbane Road, the main street leading to the historic center of Ipswich, cuts right through the heart of Dinmore.
