Gazing across Coney Island Creek, can you envision the ghosts of Lenape fishermen casting their nets? These waters, once teeming with shellfish and fish, were the lifeblood of the Algonquin people. Coney Island Creek, nestled in southwest Brooklyn, flows into Gravesend Bay. It’s a far cry from the bustling entertainment hub of Coney Island we know today. The creek witnessed the transformation of the area, from Algonquin hunting grounds to colonial farmland. Imagine Coney Island as part of Gravesend, one of the few English townships in early Brooklyn. During the 1800s, the railroad brought crowds to Coney Island’s beaches. Grand hotels arose, catering to visitors eager for horse racing. By the 1890s, amusement rides and spectacles began to define Coney Island’s character. The arrival of the subway in the 1920s cemented Coney Island Creek’s place in the heart of New York City’s recreational landscape.Sadly, Coney Island Creek bears the scars of progress. The creek, once a natural wonder, has been largely channelized. Bulkheads and riprap line its banks. The lower portion is a graveyard of wrecks, barges, and debris. Further upstream, abandoned cars and boats choke the waterway. Urbanization has overwhelmed the creek’s natural ability to cleanse itself. Combined sewer overflows and stormwater runoff dump millions of gallons of waste into Coney Island Creek annually. This has led to poor water quality and impacted aquatic life. While a return to its pristine state is impossible, efforts are underway to improve the creek’s health. The development of a Long Term Control Plan aims to mitigate the impact of combined sewer overflows and restore some of the creek’s former glory.
