How about a story of faith, community, and one remarkable woman? This is the story of St. Emily Methodist Church Plaque. It all began with Mrs. Emily Brown.
Born into slavery in 1845, Emily became a midwife. She was also a mother to seven children. According to local stories, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Old River already existed here. Then, Emily inherited this land from her employer.
In 1881, Emily Brown deeded an acre of this land. It went to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her husband Thompson Brown was among those trustees. Shortly after, the church was renamed St. Emily. This honored her service to both black and white communities in West Chambers County.
For many years, St. Emily was unique. It stood as the only African American church in Old River. The building was a simple white frame structure. It served a dual purpose as both a church and a school.
Imagine Sundays back then. Once a month, the preacher would arrive. Families came with baskets brimming with food. These were daylong events filled with fellowship.
The original church building served its congregation for over 95 years. It was remodeled in 1946. Then in 1970, it was renamed St. Emily United Methodist Church.
In 1976, the community rallied together. They began extensive fundraising efforts. By 1978, a new sanctuary was built and consecrated. A fellowship hall followed in 1986.
Even today, St. Emily continues its tradition. The congregation serves through programs. These include a health and welfare ministry. They also have a high education department.
The St. Emily Church experience welcomes everyone. The church enhances the Baytown and Houston communities. This happens through Christian service and outreach. The ministries at St. Emily spread the word and love of Jesus Christ.
So, as you stand before the St. Emily Methodist Church Plaque, remember Emily Brown. Think about her legacy of faith. Consider her dedication to community. This plaque marks more than just a church. It commemorates a testament to the enduring power of service and love.
