In 1804, a small group of just twelve souls gathered near the banks of Mill Creek. They laid the foundation for what would become Millcreek Baptist Church. This wasn’t the grand structure you see before you today. Their first sanctuary was a humble log building, located about a mile and a quarter from this very spot, along the old turnpike from Buchanan to Amsterdam. Reverend William Moorman, pastor of Buffaloe Church in Rockbridge County, planted this seed of faith. Imagine those early worshippers, their voices echoing through the wooden walls as they praised God. Fast forward to 1854. The congregation, now numbering ninety-three, outgrew their log church. They needed a larger space to worship. A new brick church, aptly named the “Old Brick Church,” was erected. Some pieces of this “Old Brick Church” are still here today. Look closely inside Millcreek Baptist Church and you’ll find the original communion table. The wooden armchair sits quietly, bearing witness to generations of faith. Even the organ, purchased in 1907 for a mere $80, continues to fill the sanctuary with music. The large pulpit Bible, dating back to 1882, is another treasure. The oil lamps and grandfather clock are also remnants of this bygone era. In 1910, a building committee, under the guidance of church member Tillie Brugh, contracted A.J. Miller to construct a new church. The old brick church wasn’t forgotten. Its bricks were used to form the inner walls of the new sanctuary, a tangible link to the past. In 1911, Millcreek Baptist Church moved to its current location, right where we stand today. The land was acquired from Mr. B.P. Obenshain, solidifying the church’s presence in the community. Growth continued. In 1964, a new educational building was dedicated. Then, in 2006, discussions began for another expansion. The congregation voted overwhelmingly in favor of the project. Construction, led by Building Committee Chair Lara Lee Strickler, began in 2012. Finally, in 2014, the new building was dedicated, a testament to the enduring faith of the Millcreek Baptist Church community. From a small log cabin to the magnificent structure before us, Millcreek Baptist Church has stood the test of time, a beacon of faith for over two centuries.
